Illinois invests in climate smart farming

By Andi Anderson

Illinois has secured a major investment in its agricultural sector with a $111 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This funding, part of a larger $430 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, aims to promote climate smart agricultural practices and improve environmental health across the state.

Of the total amount, the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) will receive $73 million, specifically earmarked for the promotion of climate smart agricultural practices such as cover crops, strip till, and no-till farming.

These methods are recognized for their ability to improve soil health, reduce erosion, and enhance water retention. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) will receive $38 million, which will be used to electrify small engines, reducing pollution and contributing to cleaner air.

Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the significance of this investment, stating that it aligns with both federal and state goals of achieving a clean energy future while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The funding will support clean agriculture, buildings, and transport, positioning Illinois as a leader in sustainable development.

Director of IDOA, Jerry Costello II, emphasized the long-term benefits of these investments for Illinois farmers.

The grant provides a stable source of funding over five years, giving farmers the confidence to adopt sustainable practices that will benefit both their land and future generations.

This new funding builds on existing programs under Governor Pritzker’s administration. For example, the Fall Covers for Spring Savings Cover Crop Program has already provided over $1.4 million in crop insurance rebates to 2,150 farmers.

IDOA has invested $12.6 million in partnership with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to place 40 frontline Conservation Planners throughout Illinois, offering direct support to farmers.

The grant also complements other initiatives such as the Soil Health Initiative and partnerships with programs like Saving Tomorrow’s Agriculture Resources (STAR).

These efforts focus on nutrient management, soil health, water quality, and cost savings for farmers.

Overall, this significant investment underscores Illinois’ commitment to fostering sustainable farming practices, ensuring the state's agricultural productivity and environmental health for years to come.
