Illinois Grown Initiative Supports Local Farmers and Agriculture

Illinois Grown Initiative Supports Local Farmers and Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) has launched Illinois Grown, a program designed to promote locally sourced products and strengthen the state’s agricultural economy.

The Illinois Grown logo will be featured on products that are either grown in Illinois or contain at least one ingredient sourced from the state.

The program connects consumers with local farmers and businesses, making it easier to choose Illinois-made goods. IDOA Director Jerry Costello II emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “Consumers who buy Illinois Grown products directly support local farmers and businesses.”

One key aspect of the initiative is the Illinois Grown pledge, which encourages residents to spend at least $10 a week on locally produced items. This small change can help reinvest millions of dollars into the state's economy.

Consumers who take the pledge will receive a free reusable bag or sticker as a token of appreciation. The pledge can be completed online at Illinois Grown Pledge.

For farmers, food producers, and agricultural businesses, the Illinois Grown logo offers several benefits:

  • Increased visibility through state marketing campaigns.
  • Targeted reach to consumers who prefer local products.
  • No extra cost for participation, as IDOA covers marketing expenses.

Retailers can also participate by showcasing Illinois Grown products in their stores. Businesses will receive free in-store display materials to help promote local goods.

By choosing Illinois Grown products, consumers play a direct role in supporting the state’s agricultural sector and building a sustainable local economy.
