Illinois fair - piglets on parade

By Andi Anderson

Visitors to the Illinois State Fair have a unique opportunity to experience the popular Piglets on Parade at the Birthing Center.

Sponsored by the Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA), this exhibit offers a close-up view of newborn piglets and a chance to learn about pig farming from knowledgeable volunteers.

JoBeth Matli, the 2024 Pork Ambassador from Raymond, IL, emphasizes the importance of educating the public about agriculture. “Educating those around us and promoting agriculture is what stewards of agriculture do each day,” she says.

The Birthing Center aims to bridge the gap between people from agricultural backgrounds and those who may be unfamiliar with farming practices. Fairgoers are encouraged to visit the center, see the pigs, and ask any questions they may have.

Children visiting the Piglets on Parade will enjoy free goodies, including paper pig ears as a fun keepsake. Volunteers with experience in the pork industry will be on hand to answer questions about pigs, pig farming, and pork production.

They will guide visitors through the barn, where they can see sows (mother pigs) with their newborn piglets.

Located next to the Illinois Department of Agriculture tent, just east of the Coliseum and north of the Expo Building, Piglets on Parade is a must-see for anyone attending the fair. For those who can't make it in person, a live "Piglet Cam" is available online, allowing viewers to watch the piglets 24/7.

This event is not only entertaining but also educational, offering insights into the world of pig farming and the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. Whether you're a seasoned farmer or someone new to the agricultural world, the Piglets on Parade at the Illinois State Fair Birthing Center is an experience you won’t want to miss.
