As people grow older, they often face challenges that affect their health, confidence, and daily life. These challenges may include changes in memory, social participation, physical well-being, and financial decision-making.
To help individuals stay informed and maintain a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle, community education plays an important role.
A helpful resource in this area is the Lessons for Living series, a free online program designed to empower adults of all ages with practical tools that support long-term wellness.
The one-hour virtual sessions focus on easy-to-understand guidance for strengthening everyday life skills. The program highlights topics such as nutrition, personal health, financial literacy, and general well-being.
According to program leaders, the series is created to be accessible, inclusive, and useful for people in different stages of life.
The goal is to provide education that supports healthy choices, encourages independence, and builds confidence. Each session offers simple strategies that participants can apply in their daily routines.
The 2026 schedule features four unique sessions. “What’s in My Food? Decoding Chemicals and Safety” helps people learn how to read food labels, understand ingredients, and make informed nutrition decisions. It will be held on February 10 at 10 a.m. and August 11 at 2 p.m.
“Gardening on a Budget” teaches participants how to start a low-cost container garden that supports both health and savings. This session will take place on April 14 at 10 a.m. and September 10 at 10 a.m.
“Fur Real Companionship” explores the emotional benefits of companionship, especially for people who may not be able to care for a pet. This session is scheduled for May 14 at 10 a.m. and October 13 at 2 p.m.
“Become a Dementia Friend” offers simple ways to support community members living with dementia. It will be held on June 9 at 2 p.m. and November 12 at 10 a.m.
Participation is free, but registration is required at go.illinois.edu/2026HCElessons. Individuals needing accommodations or more information may contact the program team by email or phone. Early requests are encouraged to ensure proper support.
