Figs Thrive in Home Gardens Across Colder Regions

Figs Thrive in Home Gardens Across Colder Regions

By Andi Anderson

Figs are an ancient fruit that is now gaining popularity among home gardeners in colder regions.

Traditionally suited for warm climates, figs are now accessible to more growers due to climate change and the availability of cold-hardy varieties like the Chicago Hardy fig.

The Chicago Hardy fig is known for its ability to withstand cold weather and performs well across Illinois and other similar regions. These trees are not only valued for their sweet and savory fruit but also for their attractive appearance.

Their large, deeply lobed leaves and interesting bark make them a beautiful feature in any garden.

These fig trees can be planted directly in the ground or in large containers. Although they are hardy, it’s best to place them in a protected area with minimal wind exposure.

They need six to eight hours of full sunlight daily and prefer loamy, rich soil. During the first year, figs should be watered regularly. After that, they can handle mild drought conditions quite well.

Figs are easy to care for and rarely affected by pests. They can be pruned heavily, and gardeners can maintain their height at about six feet. The Chicago Hardy fig is self-pollinating, meaning it doesn't need insects to produce fruit.

One of the most exciting facts is that figs often produce fruit in the first year, unlike many other fruit trees. Only harvest figs once they are fully ripe—they should be deep purple or brown and slightly soft to the touch.

To overwinter, apply mulch around ground-planted figs or move container-grown ones indoors. The tree will go dormant and needs only occasional watering.

Figs are not only delicious—try grilling them with balsamic vinegar—but also an attractive and rewarding choice for any home gardener.
