Ducks Unlimited Connects Conservation with Productive Farmland

By Andi Anderson

Ducks Unlimited is widely known for its work in waterfowl conservation, but the organization’s roots and mission stretch much further. Founded in 1937, its focus has always been to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands that support waterfowl, wildlife, and communities.

Today, that mission includes strong partnerships with farmers who play a key role in protecting natural resources.

In a recent episode of IL Corn TV, Shane Gray spoke with Jena Herrick, Manager of Conservation Programs for the Big Rivers Initiative, and Fletcher Morgan, Central Illinois Regional Director for Ducks Unlimited.

They explained how the organization works closely with farmers to support conservation while keeping farm profitability a priority.

Ducks Unlimited collaborates with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to restore floodplain wetlands and expand habitat in public areas.

One of the most popular programs among farmers is the Fall Covers for Spring Savings Program. This initiative provides a $5-per-acre crop insurance discount to growers who plant cover crops, encouraging practices that protect soil and water.

Herrick explained that while cover crops do not directly connect to ducks, they play a major role in improving water quality and soil structure. “Clean water and healthy soils ultimately have a great impact on our wetland ecosystems,” she said.

These improvements help support wildlife habitat and safeguard natural resources across the state.

Another important area of work involves helping landowners with marginal acres—fields that are often wet, flood-prone, or difficult to farm profitably. Herrick emphasized that Ducks Unlimited does not seek to remove productive land from agriculture.

Instead, she noted, “We’re not in the business of taking productive acres out of production. But if a grower has an area that’s always wet or less profitable, we can help explore restoration or grassland options that improve both the bottom line and the environment.”

This balanced approach supports farmers in making informed decisions that strengthen both their operations and the surrounding landscape. The message shared by Ducks Unlimited remains simple and clear: farm the best, conserve the rest. When farmland productivity and conservation go hand in hand, both people and wildlife benefit.
