The Williamsfield FFA Land Use Team is making headlines with their hard work and dedication. For the past three years, they have focused on analyzing soil profiles, measuring slopes, and making conservation decisions, earning recognition at both section and state levels.
Their journey faced early challenges, including a rainy first state contest that damaged their materials. However, the team persevered, learning from every experience.
Under the guidance of Brandon Hall, a soils expert and president of the local FFA Alumni and Supporters chapter, they sharpened their skills through hands-on practice and regular study sessions.
Hall, a nationally ranked soils competitor, shared his passion and expertise, helping the team win their first state title three years ago. His commitment to teaching has ignited enthusiasm among students, building a strong foundation for future teams.
The team’s preparation involved studying soil characteristics, land capability, erosion risks, and conservation methods. With local farmers supporting them by allowing practice pits on their lands, the team explored diverse soil types, improving their judging abilities.
Their efforts paid off. In their second year, they placed second overall at the state level, with a team member securing second individually. Recently, they achieved a major milestone by placing first as a team and securing first, second, fourth, and ninth individual positions.
At the section level, Williamsfield has maintained its dominance for three consecutive years. Now, the team is preparing for the National Land and Range Judging Contest 2025 in El Reno, Oklahoma. They are studying new land use practices and practicing in different terrains to meet national competition standards.
Beyond competitions, team members like Kyla Doubet are planning futures in fields like soil science and finance. Their hard work not only earns them awards but also prepares them with skills that will benefit them throughout their careers.
