Twilight Series Brings Farmers Together

Twilight Series Brings Farmers Together

By Andi Anderson

The Summer Twilight Series is a seasonal educational program that supports farmers, educators, and community members across southern Illinois.

Organized by Illinois Extension, the series focuses on strengthening local food systems through shared learning and real farm experiences.

The events are held on select Monday evenings, May 18, June 22, during the summer months and are open to people interested in agriculture and community development.

Each session will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes guided farm tours, discussions, and opportunities to interact with local producers.

Participants learn about modern and traditional farming practices, crop and livestock management, and creative marketing methods. The program highlights how local farms adapt to challenges while meeting the needs of their communities.

The 2026 series features a variety of farms across southern Illinois. These include a greenhouse operation, diversified crop and livestock farms, and family-owned agricultural businesses.

Each location offers unique lessons on sustainability, productivity, and innovation. By visiting different types of farms, participants gain a broad understanding of regional agriculture.

A key goal of the Summer Twilight Series is community building. The events encourage open conversation and peer-to-peer learning. Farmers share their experiences, successes, and challenges, helping others find practical solutions.

Educators and community members also gain insight into where food comes from and how local systems function.

The program is designed to be educational and welcoming for learners of all ages. Information is shared in simple language, making it easy for students and new learners to understand farming concepts.

The relaxed evening setting supports discussion and collaboration in a friendly environment.

The Summer Twilight Series plays an important role in supporting Illinois' agriculture. By connecting people directly with farms, the program builds trust, spreads knowledge, and promotes stronger local food networks.

It also encourages appreciation for farming and highlights its importance to healthy communities and regional development.
