Trade Tensions and Biofuel Uncertainty Impact Agribusiness Profits

Trade Tensions and Biofuel Uncertainty Impact Agribusiness Profits

By Andi Anderson

The agribusiness sector is feeling the pressure of ongoing trade tensions and uncertainty surrounding U.S. biofuel policies, which have led to multi-year lows in profits for major crop trading companies like Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) and Bunge Global SA. The volatile trade environment and shifting biofuel policies have hindered crop processing margins, slowing sales for these industry giants.

Archer-Daniels-Midland posted its lowest second-quarter profit in five years, warning that full-year earnings would decline.

However, the company is hopeful for an improved operating environment in the latter half of the year, as recent U.S. government proposals to boost biofuel use may help strengthen margins. Despite the challenges, ADM's shares saw a slight uptick, reflecting cautious optimism.

Similarly, Bunge reported its lowest second-quarter earnings in seven years. Despite these challenges, Bunge is betting on its recent acquisition of Viterra Inc. to help revive its profits.

The company is actively looking for cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements across its newly merged operations.

In the equipment manufacturing sector, companies like AGCO Corp. and CNH Industrial NV are warning that U.S. tariffs are likely to push up the prices of agricultural equipment.

The tariffs, particularly on European-made machinery, will force companies to pass on additional costs to farmers. AGCO has indicated that it will absorb some costs but will likely raise prices for its high-end equipment, such as Fendt tractors and combines.

These rising costs are expected to affect farmers, both in the U.S. and abroad, adding pressure to already strained margins in the agricultural sector.
