The Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) has announced its Social Innovation and Impact Seed Grant program for 2026. The funding opportunity is designed to support early-stage research and community projects that directly improve lives across Illinois. The application deadline is May 21, 2026.
These seed grants aim to help new ideas grow into impactful solutions. Projects must be early concepts that have not been previously funded by this program or IIN’s Sustaining Illinois initiative. The focus is on creative and practical problem solving that builds strong and trusted partnerships with local communities. Even projects that have received other early funding may qualify if they are still in the development stage.
A major focus area of this program is water, food, and agriculture. Illinois plays a significant role in national food production and has access to important freshwater resources through the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Basin. The grants encourage projects that strengthen sustainable farming, protect water resources, and improve food systems. These efforts support farmers, protect the environment, and help communities gain better access to nutritious food.
In addition to agriculture, the grants support education and workforce development, economic growth, health and wellness, environmental sustainability, social justice, arts and humanities, and computing and data. Technology such as data science and artificial intelligence is encouraged as a tool to support agriculture, sustainability, and community development.
The program values projects that address real social challenges such as food security, environmental stress, workforce skills, and community well being. By supporting early research and testing of ideas, IIN aims to create long term solutions that benefit the entire state.
These grants reflect a commitment to inclusive growth and shared progress. When agriculture research is connected with community needs and innovation, it strengthens rural and urban areas alike.
The Social Innovation and Impact Seed Grant program offers an important opportunity for researchers and partners to build a healthier, more sustainable future for Illinois through agriculture and social innovation.
