New Leadership in Illinois Farm Bureau

New Leadership in Illinois Farm Bureau

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) recently named Brian Duncan as President and Evan Hultine as Vice President, marking a significant move in agricultural leadership amid ongoing challenges.

Both leaders express a profound commitment to the organization's mission and the agricultural community they serve. Brian Duncan emphasizes the importance of their roles, highlighting their dedication to advocating for members and the agricultural sector.

A pressing concern in 2024 for farmers is the restricted interstate exports affecting Illinois agriculture. Duncan addresses the challenge posed by California's Proposition 12, enacted on January 1, impacting the sale of USDA-approved products in the state.

Proposition 12 focuses on safeguarding animal welfare, particularly for egg-laying hens, mother pigs, and calves. However, it prohibits the sale of caged animal products from out-of-state sources, leading to price hikes in California.

The ramifications extend beyond agricultural trade, impacting consumers, especially those on fixed incomes and military personnel. Duncan stresses the urgency to find a solution, acknowledging the complexity of executing remedies in such situations.

At the national level, California's Proposition 12 has spurred debate, known as the "Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act." Senator Tammy Duckworth and several Illinois House Representatives have voiced opposition to the act, recognizing its implications for agricultural trade.

The newly appointed leadership in the Illinois Farm Bureau faces critical challenges as they navigate agricultural policies and trade barriers, striving to protect the interests of farmers and consumers alike.
