Mark your calendar for recycling Chemical Jugs

Mark your calendar for recycling Chemical Jugs

As Illinois farmers gear up for the 2024 growing season, the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is rolling out its annual recycling effort aimed at tackling the issue of pesticide container disposal. Designed to provide a convenient and environmentally responsible solution, the program encourages farmers and agrichemical facilities to participate in recycling empty pesticide containers.

Director Jerry Costello II underscores the importance of the program, stating, "This annual program provides a convenient way for farmers and agrichemical facilities to dispose of empty pesticide containers." By diverting these containers from landfills, participants contribute to environmental sustainability while adhering to responsible waste management practices.

To ensure the success of the recycling initiative, IDOA has outlined specific criteria for eligible containers. Only high-density polyethylene, No. 2 plastic agrichemical containers that are clean and dry will be accepted at collection sites. Metal and household pesticide containers are not eligible for recycling. Participants are also advised to remove all caps, valves, metal, labels, booklets, and foil seals from the containers before recycling. Additionally, plastic drums require special preparation, with IDOA recommending cutting off the top and bottom and slicing the sides vertically.

The program extends its services beyond traditional pesticide jugs, accommodating mini bulk and intermediate bulk containers. However, participants must adhere to specific guidelines for preparing these containers for recycling, such as cutting them into separate pieces and discarding fittings.

Farmers seeking assistance with recycling mini bulk and intermediate bulk containers can contact G. Phillips and Sons LLC for pickup services throughout the year.

The recycling effort encompasses both permanent and one-time collection sites across various counties in Illinois. Permanent collection sites include locations in Pike County, Lawrence County, and White County, providing ongoing opportunities for farmers to dispose of pesticide containers responsibly.

For those unable to access permanent collection sites, one-time collection events offer a convenient alternative. These events, scheduled throughout July and August, provide farmers with specific dates and locations for dropping off empty pesticide containers.

The initiative represents a collaborative endeavor involving IDOA, the Agriculture Container Recycling Council, Growmark Inc., the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, G. Phillips and Sons LLC, the Illinois Farm Bureau, and University of Illinois Extension. Together, these partners work to promote environmental stewardship and support sustainable agricultural practices.

As the 2024 growing season unfolds, Illinois farmers are encouraged to participate in the IDOA's recycling program, contributing to a cleaner and greener agricultural landscape for future generations.
