Livestock Judging Empowers Youth to Cultivate Expertise and Skills

Illinois 4-H members recently showcased their talents and expertise in the field of livestock judging at the University of Illinois campus. Instead of leading animals, these young participants assumed the role of judges, carefully evaluating cattle, hogs, and sheep based on breed standards, physical attributes, and gain efficiency.

The 2023 State Livestock Judging Contest provided a platform for youth to demonstrate their commitment, hard work, and professionalism. Under the guidance of team coaches, participants honed their technical judging skills while also focusing on positive youth development throughout the year.

Shelby Carlson, a 4-H youth development educator, expressed admiration for the participants, recognizing their remarkable dedication. She highlighted the opportunities for these young individuals to continue competing at higher levels, potentially even securing scholarships in college.

The contest yielded impressive results, with top performers in both the junior and senior divisions. From individual achievements to outstanding team performances, the event showcased the breadth of talent within the Illinois 4-H community.

The livestock judging contest not only nurtures the participants' passion for agriculture but also equips them with critical skills in evaluation, decision-making, and professionalism. It serves as a testament to the ongoing commitment of organizations like the Illinois 4-H Foundation and Illinois Farm Bureau to support and empower the next generation of agricultural leaders.
