Illinois Tops U.S. Corn Industry

Illinois Tops U.S. Corn Industry

By Andi Anderson

Corn farming plays a vital role in shaping the American economy, supporting industries, and fostering community development. Among all U.S. states, Illinois has earned the top spot for total economic output related to corn farming.

This recognition goes beyond crop production and highlights the state’s strong agricultural network and its impact across multiple industries.

In 2023, Illinois farmers produced 2.27 billion bushels of corn, slightly more than the previous year. With an impressive average yield of 206 bushels per acre, Illinois ranks second nationally in corn production.

However, when it comes to total economic output, the state takes the number one position due to the extensive contribution of corn farming, its supply chain, and related household spending.

This achievement shows how deeply connected corn farming is to the broader economy. Over 524 industry sectors across all 50 states and the District of Columbia benefit from linkages to corn grain farming. These connections generate jobs, stimulate innovation, and strengthen local economies.

Being number one in economic output also means Illinois continues to lead in areas that matter most — job creation, technological progress, environmental stewardship, and community growth. The success of Illinois farmers symbolizes the strength of U.S. agriculture and its ability to influence global food systems positively.

Just like a championship team brings pride and inspiration, Illinois’s leadership in corn-based economic output showcases what dedication, innovation, and collaboration can achieve in modern agriculture. The state’s thriving corn industry not only feeds the world but also fuels a stronger, more sustainable economy for everyone.
