Illinois farmers once again proved their leadership in corn production by delivering strong performances in the 2025 National Corn Yield Contest organized by the National Corn Growers Association.
The results highlighted the state’s continued focus on innovation, careful management, and agronomic excellence.
Now in its 61st year, the Yield Contest attracted nearly 7,800 entries from farmers across 47 states. Participants competed in 10 production categories that reflect different farming practices and field conditions.
Verified yields from all entries averaged an impressive 269 bushels per acre, showing how favorable growing conditions supported a projected record U.S. corn crop.
“The Yield Contest is really about finding out what this crop is capable of,” said Ohio grower and NCGA President Jed Bower. “It challenges participants to find innovative ways to succeed and contributes to decades of agronomic data that prove American farmers are among the best in the world.”
Illinois growers stood out across multiple state categories. In conventional non irrigated production, top yields were achieved by John Groves, Tony Uphoff, and Ryan Albin. No till non irrigated honors went to Kate Danner, Alan Johnston, and Robb Klinger.
Strong results were also recorded in strip till and minimum till systems, where Trent Uphoff, Sherri Tomhave, and Dale Hadden earned leading positions.
Irrigated categories further showed Illinois strength. Dan Luepkes and Brad Noe led the no till irrigated class, while Chance Meyer, Dan Sass, and Melissa Yocum excelled in irrigated strip till systems.
Conventional irrigated winners included Greg McClure and David Luepkes, demonstrating consistent performance across varied management approaches.
Illinois farmers also gained national recognition in the Nitrogen Management category. Jared Brown placed third nationally, followed by strong finishes from Rob Park, Kate Danner, and Eric Miller. These results highlighted the importance of responsible nutrient use and environmental stewardship.
Overall, 30 national winners and 567 state winners will be recognized at the 2026 Commodity Classic in San Antonio. The strong showing by Illinois farmers reflects their ongoing commitment to productivity, innovation, and sustainable corn farming practices.
