Free Summer Fun Returns to Du Quoin State Fairgrounds

By Andi Anderson

The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is inviting families and community members to enjoy free summer fun across its 750-acre property. With school out and the sun shining, the fairgrounds offer a safe, scenic, and entertaining destination for all ages.

One of the main attractions is “Chalk the ‘Phalt”, happening every Friday in June. Everyone is welcome to grab sidewalk chalk and turn the fairgrounds’ pavement into colorful works of art. Paint and markers are not allowed—only chalk—to keep the event safe and easy to clean.

For nature lovers, a walk along the scenic Nature Trail is the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors. The trail now features new signs with the Natural Areas logo, helping visitors identify native pollinator habitats that support bees, butterflies, birds, and even bats.

Families looking for some light exercise can take advantage of the miles of paved roads perfect for a bike ride. With gentle hills and quiet paths, it’s a relaxing way to enjoy nature together.

Fishing fans can bring their gear and cast a line in one of the many lakes. Just remember, a valid Illinois fishing license is required for those aged 16 and older.

For a relaxing meal outdoors, pack a basket and enjoy a lakeside picnic. Whether it’s a simple snack or a full meal, the setting makes everything taste better. Families or groups can also rent a picnic pavilion for just $60.

The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is open and ready to offer safe, enjoyable activities for everyone. With something for every interest, it’s the perfect place to spend sunny days this summer.
