EPA And VDACS Unite for Clean Agriculture

EPA And VDACS Unite for Clean Agriculture

By Jamie Martin

In a milestone collaboration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 3 and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) have signed their first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen environmental protection and agricultural sustainability across Virginia.

The new agreement expands cooperative activities in training, education, compliance, and outreach, and ensures that farmers have a voice in environmental discussions. “Establishing a strong relationship with our state regulators is a win for all farmers and ranchers,” said EPA Senior Advisor for Agricultural and Rural Affairs Turner Bridgforth. “This MOU lays the groundwork to ensure farmers have a seat at the table when it comes to protecting our environment and Powering the Great American Comeback.”

EPA Regional Administrator Amy Van Blarcom-Lackey and VDACS Commissioner Joseph Guthrie signed the MOU, emphasizing collaboration between federal and state agencies. “This marks a new chapter for partnership between EPA and the Commonwealth to protect Virginia’s environment and help its agricultural economy thrive,” said Van Blarcom-Lackey.

The five-year agreement commits both agencies to supporting well-managed, sustainable farms that protect water quality, soil health, and natural resources. “We are happy to partner with the EPA to develop solutions for environmental protection and to keep Virginia agriculture productive,” said Guthrie.

As part of the launch, the Virginia Farm Bureau (VFB) hosted a roundtable meeting in Richmond, bringing together EPA, VDACS, and agriculture and forestry stakeholders to discuss collaboration opportunities. “It is important for farmers and foresters to have their questions answered, their input considered, and the door opened for future dialogue,” said VFB President Scott Sink.

The MOU outlines goals to increase state-federal coordination, foster open communication through farm tours and events, promote environmental stewardship, and improve regulatory compliance. Both agencies will publish an annual progress report highlighting achievements and next steps.

This agreement marks a significant advancement in environmental cooperation, promoting a future where Virginia agriculture and environmental stewardship grow together sustainably.
