Drought Conditions Threaten Central Illinois Crops and May Lead to Higher Food Prices

Drought Conditions Threaten Central Illinois Crops and May Lead to Higher Food Prices

Drought conditions across the state have been worsening including in central Illinois. Central Illinois has not seen substantial rain since early May. Experts say crops aren’t in trouble yet, but if we don’t see rain in the next few weeks, it could be a different story.

“It's setting up that it could be a pretty major drought, but again we don’t know that yet. So right now we’re just sitting here with the potential for much lower yields here in Illinois,” said Gary Schnitkey, a University of Illinois professor of farm management and the Soybean Industry Chair in Agricultural Strategy.
