Dairy Gains New National Support

Dairy Gains New National Support

By Jamie Martin

Dairy foods are gaining stronger support in the United States as updated nutrition guidance highlights milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter as important whole foods. Whole milk is returning to school meal programs after being limited in past recommendations.

Dairy provides complete protein that supports muscle growth and repair. It also supplies calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, which help build strong bones and lower the risk of bone loss with age.

Dairy foods contain important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, zinc, iodine, potassium, magnesium, and B vitamins. These nutrients support immune health, brain development, nerve function, and heart health. Many people do not get enough of these nutrients in their daily diets.

Whole-fat dairy products may also help improve fullness and support better eating habits. The natural combination of fat and protein in dairy helps people feel satisfied longer, which may support weight management.

Dairy is also one of the most affordable sources of nutrition. It offers many essential nutrients at a low cost per serving, making it an important food choice for families and school meal programs.

Beyond health benefits, dairy supports rural communities. Most dairy farms in the United States are family-owned. These farms provide jobs in farming, transportation, processing, and food distribution. Dairy farmers also partner with food banks to help provide nutritious foods to families facing food insecurity.

Even as farmers face economic challenges, demand for dairy continues to grow. With strong nutrition benefits, affordable pricing, and positive community impact, dairy remains an important and trusted food across the country.
