Illinois has always been proud of its hardworking farmers who cultivate vast stretches of land. Farming can become difficult when facing disabilities or chronic illnesses. To help local farmers in such situations, the Illinois AgrAbility program has been providing essential support for over 30 years.
The Illinois AgrAbility initiative, led by Dr. Josie Rudolphi, is focused on helping farmers, veterans, and farmworkers who experience disabilities or health conditions that make it challenging to continue their work. The program offers practical guidance, on-site farm assessments, and recommendations for suitable equipment and assistive technology, enabling farmers to overcome obstacles and keep farming.
Dr. Rudolphi emphasizes the importance of Illinois's agricultural productivity, stating, "Our farmers and farm families play a vital role in ensuring an abundant and safe food supply." However, disabilities or health conditions can threaten their livelihoods and disrupt their way of life. AgrAbility steps in to provide support, allowing farmers to carry out their agricultural activities safely and efficiently while actively participating in their rural communities.
Illinois AgrAbility offers a range of services, including identifying farmers, veterans, or farmworkers with disabilities, conducting free on-site farm assessments, suggesting appropriate assistive technology, providing educational opportunities, and offering referrals to other service providers. The program is funded by a federal grant from the USDA and collaborates with Extension educators, disability experts, rural professionals, and volunteers who generously contribute their time and expertise without any cost to the farmers.
Craig Wadsworth, a client services representative for AgrAbility, explains their personalized approach. Through interviews and farm visits, AgrAbility representatives gather important information about farmers' abilities and aspirations. This knowledge allows them to recommend available assistive technology that aligns with the farmers' goals.
In partnership with the Illinois Assistive Technology Program and Community Health Partnership of Illinois, Illinois AgrAbility is well-prepared to serve farmers across the state. Farmers who require assistance can easily access support and completing a simple form. For any questions or concerns, AgrAbility staff can be reached via email at agrability@illinois.edu or by phone at 217-244-2948
Illinois AgrAbility remains dedicated to supporting local farmers who face disabilities or chronic health conditions, ensuring they can continue their valuable contributions to the agricultural landscape. By providing crucial resources and bridging the gap between challenges and opportunities, the program helps local farmers maintain their way of life and thrive in their farming endeavors.
