Many farmers in central Illinois have finished planting their crops and are now waiting for much-needed rain. The spring season brought ideal conditions for planting, with adequate moisture and favorable field conditions. However, following a half-inch rain nearly two weeks ago, a dry spell has hit the area, causing concern for the newly planted crops.
Farmers are now battling crusted soil, using rotary hoes to get the crops up and going. Fields in northern Montgomery and southern Sangamon County are reported to be 85% to 90% planted.
The dry spell has been a cause for concern, and many farmers are anxiously waiting for rain. Without sufficient moisture, the crops may struggle to grow, impacting yield potential and profitability. While the weather is unpredictable, farmers remain hopeful for a good growing season ahead.
