Celebrating Illinois Women Leaders in Agriculture and Business

Illinois State Representative Amy Elik, R-Alton, recently honored local female leaders at the Emerging Women Leaders brunch held in Springfield. The event recognized the contributions of emerging female leaders from across Illinois. Among those recognized were Julie Johnson and Desirée Bennyhoff.

Julie Johnson, the Chairperson of the LCCC Board of Trustees, has extensive experience in accounting and auditing. She grew up on a dairy farm in Nokomis and still helps her husband’s family farm. Meanwhile, Bennyhoff is the CEO of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, the largest pro-business organization in southern Madison County. She has received several awards and is an alumna of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

The event included a discussion on the important issues for women in Illinois and how the General Assembly can create policies that reflect their priorities. The recognition of Johnson and Bennyhoff’s contributions highlights the significant role women leaders play in the economic growth and prosperity of Illinois.

Farms are a crucial part of the Illinois economy, and Johnson’s agricultural background highlights the importance of farming in the state. Agriculture contributes over $19 billion to the state's economy, and the state is a leader in the production of corn, soybeans, and swine. Farms are an integral part of rural communities, and Johnson’s involvement in farming showcases the close-knit nature of these communities.

Bennyhoff’s work in the pro-business organization shows the importance of businesses in driving economic growth in Illinois. The state has a diverse economy, with a focus on manufacturing, finance, and technology. The state’s central location and transportation infrastructure make it an ideal location for businesses looking to expand.

The recognition of female leaders like Johnson and Bennyhoff is vital in promoting gender equality and showcasing the critical role that women play in Illinois's economy and communities.
