The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Department of Agriculture have announced temporary changes in traffic and parking around the Illinois State Fairgrounds to manage the increased vehicle flow during the fair.
Starting at 5 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, IDOT will adjust traffic patterns around the fairgrounds to flow one way counterclockwise.
The turn lanes for both eastbound and westbound traffic from Veterans Parkway to Eighth Street will be closed. Portable signs will guide motorists through these changes. Normal traffic patterns will resume by 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19.
The Twilight Parade is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park. The parade route will travel onto Sangamon Avenue, entering through the Main Gate, proceeding down Main Street to Grandstand Avenue, and turning left to march past the Grandstand before exiting into Lot 21. Staging for the parade starts at 1:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park.
The parade route will close to traffic at 4 p.m., and detour signs will be placed along North Grand Avenue and Veterans and J. David Jones Parkways. The Parade Run will commence at 5 p.m., followed by the parade at 5:30 p.m.
The route is expected to remain closed until 9 p.m. Public parking for parade viewing will not be available in Lincoln Park and the Nelson Center. However, patrons of the Nelson Center can access the center using Third Street and Black Avenue.
Starting on Thursday, Aug. 8, parking will be prohibited on neighborhood streets south of Sangamon Avenue. These parking restrictions will be in effect until the morning of Monday, Aug. 19.
These changes aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety for all fair visitors. Motorists and residents are advised to plan accordingly and follow the posted signs and detours during this period.
