Dairy Summit Offers Research Tours and Insights

By Jamie Martin

The Dairy Innovation Hub will bring together dairy producers, researchers and agricultural professionals for its seventh annual Dairy Summit on Nov. 17 at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville.

The event is designed to showcase new research projects and encourage discussions about the future of dairy farming. Through presentations, panel discussions and tours, participants will gain valuable insights into the trends, challenges and opportunities affecting the dairy sector.

The day will begin with registration and networking, followed by opening remarks and a farmer panel. Dairy producers will discuss key issues facing their operations while sharing perspectives on the industry's most pressing needs. Their experiences will help guide conversations around future research and innovation priorities.

Attendees will also hear updates on recently funded research projects supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub. Short research presentations will highlight advancements that may help improve dairy production, product development, environmental performance, and operational efficiency across the industry.

Networking opportunities throughout the event will allow participants to connect with researchers, students, farmers, and agricultural businesses. A poster showcase and themed roundtable discussions will provide additional opportunities to exchange ideas and explore new partnerships.

A major feature of the event will be tours of UW–Platteville’s Pioneer Farm. Participants will visit several research and educational sites focused on dairy management, dairy manufacturing, agroecosystems, and manure innovation. These tours will demonstrate how research is being applied to address real-world agricultural challenges.

The Dairy Summit will also offer a virtual attendance option for those unable to travel. In addition, recorded sessions will be made available on YouTube, helping expand access to the event's educational content and research findings.

The Dairy Innovation Hub was established in 2019 to strengthen Wisconsin’s dairy industry through research, talent development and innovation. Since then, the program has supported 24 faculty hires and more than 300 research projects across three University of Wisconsin campuses.

Supported by an annual state investment of $7.8 million, the Hub focuses on advancing projects that support dairy farm profitability, environmental sustainability and long-term industry growth. Its collaborative approach helps connect university expertise with the practical needs of dairy producers and businesses.

Wisconsin remains one of the most important dairy-producing regions in North America, with the dairy sector contributing an estimated $52.8 billion to the state's economy. Continued investment in research and innovation helps ensure that the industry remains competitive while meeting changing consumer, environmental, and market demands.

The Dairy Summit provides an important forum where farmers, researchers, and industry stakeholders can share knowledge, discuss emerging issues, and identify solutions for the future. By promoting collaboration and innovation, the event supports a stronger and more sustainable dairy industry for years to come.
