The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) has announced an upcoming election to fill three vacant positions on the Illinois Wheat Development Board (IWDB). The election is scheduled for October 28, 2026, and will provide wheat producers with an opportunity to take part in leadership and decision-making related to the state's wheat industry.
The election will fill two district board positions in District III and District VI, along with one statewide At-Large Board Member position. Since no formal petitions were submitted for these vacancies, eligible wheat producers have the option to participate as write-in candidates.
To qualify as a candidate, producers must be of legal voting age, reside within the district they wish to represent, and be recognized as qualified wheat producers. Candidates seeking the statewide At-Large position may live in any Illinois Wheat Development Board district.
The Illinois Wheat Development Board plays a key role in supporting wheat production, promotion, research, and industry development across the state. Board members help guide programs and initiatives that benefit wheat farmers and strengthen the competitiveness of Illinois agriculture.
Voting opportunities have been arranged to ensure broad participation. Producers who are unable to vote in person may request absentee ballots through the Illinois Department of Agriculture. This option allows eligible voters to take part in the election even if they cannot visit a polling location on election day.
For those choosing to vote in person, ballots will be available at county Farm Bureau offices throughout Illinois during normal business hours on October 28, 2026. Agricultural leaders encourage wheat producers to participate in the election process and help shape the future direction of the state's wheat industry.
The board's representative districts cover counties throughout Illinois, ensuring that wheat producers from different regions have a voice in industry decisions. District III includes counties such as Champaign, Coles, Effingham, Fayette, Shelby, and Vermilion, while District VI represents southern Illinois counties including Alexander, Gallatin, Hamilton, Massac, Pulaski, Union, Wayne, White, and Williamson.
By serving on the Illinois Wheat Development Board, members can contribute to efforts that promote innovation, industry growth, market opportunities, and producer engagement. The election provides wheat farmers with the chance to take a more active role in advancing the state's wheat sector.
Eligible producers are encouraged to review election details, participate in voting, and consider running as write-in candidates to ensure strong representation for Illinois wheat growers. Additional information regarding the election, absentee ballots, and candidate eligibility is available through the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Wheat Association.
