Celebrate Illinois Bacon Day

Celebrate Illinois Bacon Day

By Andi Anderson

On May 1st, Illinois gears up to celebrate Bacon Day, an initiative by the Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) to highlight the significance of pork production in the state. Spearheaded by Senator Tom Bennett, this day aims to shed light on the challenges faced by Illinois pork producers amidst market fluctuations, environmental concerns, and high feed costs.

The event, taking place at the Illinois State Capitol, will see pig farmers, IPPA representatives, and FFA state officers distributing BLT sandwiches to legislators while discussing the crucial role of pork production in the state's economy.

Leading figures such as IPPA President Cheryl Walsh and Vice President Josh Maschhoff will be present, alongside notable pork producers like Kent Blunier, Bruce Brinkman, and Kristi Smith, all representing Illinois's diverse farming community.

To support these farmers, consumers are encouraged to participate in the #BringHomeTheBacon challenge, ensuring a consistent demand for pork products. Local restaurants will also join the festivities by featuring special pork dishes on their menus.

In the midst of celebrations, the focus remains on addressing industry challenges and fostering support for Illinois's 96% family-owned farms.
