Rural Illinois Businesses Benefit from USDA Energy Grants

By Andi Anderson

USDA Acting State Director Molly Hammond has announced significant investments in rural Illinois businesses through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). These grants, totaling over $500,000, aim to support rural businesses, farmers, and agricultural producers in adopting clean energy solutions while enhancing profitability and sustainability.

Hammond emphasized the importance of these funds in aiding rural Illinois businesses, stating, "This funding is paramount to helping rural Illinois businesses, farmers, and ag producers stay profitable while also reducing energy consumption and enabling high energy users to convert to renewable energy sources."

The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) offers grants and loans to assist agricultural producers and rural small businesses in implementing clean energy technologies and energy efficiency improvements. These investments help businesses increase their income, expand operations, combat climate change, and reduce energy costs for families.

The awarded funds will enable recipients to implement various clean energy projects, resulting in significant energy cost savings and environmental benefits. For example:

  • Kindred Farms Inc in Chrisman, IL, will install an 11 kW solar array with a $11,306 investment, saving over $800 per year in energy costs.
  • Aaron Patten's excavating business in Danville, IL, will benefit from a $16,469 investment for a 12 kW solar array, resulting in more than $2,000 in energy cost savings annually.
  • Schrumpf Insurance Agency in Godfrey, IL, will receive a $15,160 investment for a 13 kW solar array, saving over $2,100 per year in energy costs.

These projects not only reduce energy expenses for businesses but also contribute to environmental conservation by replacing traditional energy sources with renewable alternatives.

USDA continues to accept REAP applications, with funding competitions held quarterly through September 30, 2024. Interested parties can find application details in the March 31 Federal Register.

USDA's investment in clean energy initiatives underscores its commitment to supporting rural communities, promoting economic growth, and fostering environmental sustainability in Illinois and beyond.
