Illinois Kids Fishing Day at Fairgrounds

Illinois Kids Fishing Day at Fairgrounds

By Andi Anderson

The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), will organize a free fishing day for children on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and aims to introduce young participants to the basics of fishing in a fun and simple way.

Fishing poles, bait, and basic instructions will be provided by IDNR staff, making it easier for beginners to learn without needing prior experience. Children under the age of 16 do not need a fishing license to participate, while individuals aged 16 and above must carry a valid fishing license.

Registration for the program is compulsory and limited to the first 25 children. Interested families can register by calling (618) 542-1511 during office hours, which are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

On the day of the event, all participants are required to gather at 9:00 a.m. in front of Expo Hall at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.

Attendees are advised to bring essential items such as sunscreen, bug spray, drinking water, and a chair to ensure comfort during the session.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and assist their children, particularly younger participants who may need guidance while learning fishing techniques. Although older children may attend independently, family involvement is considered valuable for enhancing the overall learning experience.

The program is designed not only to teach fishing skills but also to encourage families to spend quality time together outdoors. It helps children develop patience, persistence, and a connection with nature.

“Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence,” said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “Events like this free fishing day encourage our neighbors to visit the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, which has activities and opportunities throughout the year, not just during the fair.”
