Illinois Extension Rocks the Ag World

Illinois Extension Rocks the Ag World

By Andi Anderson

The Greater Peoria Farm Show, taking place from December 2 to 4 at the Peoria Civic Center, offers farmers a chance to learn from University of Illinois Extension experts about the latest agricultural research. Illinois Extension will host a booth where attendees can discuss farm management, grain marketing, leasing, estate planning, fertilizer use, nutrient management, cover crops, and reduced tillage.

Experts will also provide information about Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, and Conservation@Home programs. According to Tara Heath, Illinois Extension commercial agriculture educator, “Extension offers farmers research-based information without selling anything. We help farmers make informed decisions for their operations.”

Throughout the event, educators and faculty from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will present on topics such as fertilizer management, plant abnormalities, insect management, and farm succession planning. New this year, Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs) can earn continuing education units by attending these presentations. Heath adds, “Offering CEUs shows our commitment to science-based learning and professional excellence.”

Illinois Extension aims to support west-central Illinois farmers through education and resources. Janice McCoy, associate director for Region 2, highlights the role of agriculture as an economic driver and contributor to local culture. She notes that Extension participation at the show is an excellent opportunity to share research and resources with the community.

Attendees can visit the booth during show hours—Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—to ask questions, get advice, and meet specialists. Media interviews will also be available at the booth.

The event is free to attend, and parking at the Peoria Civic Center is complimentary. For more information about Illinois Extension, local offices, or to request reasonable accommodations, visit extension.illinois.edu or contact Tara Heath at tsheath@illinois.edu or 309-347-6614.

This farm show highlights how research, guidance, and education from Illinois Extension help farmers improve productivity, sustainability, and overall success in today’s agriculture industry.
