IL Corn Hosts Senator to Connect Lawmakers with Family Farmers

By Andi Anderson

IL Corn recently welcomed Senator Laura Ellman to a family farm in Illinois to give her a closer look at the daily work and challenges faced by local farmers.

The visit took place at the farm of Gracie Pierson, a fourth-generation farmer who works alongside her father, Rodney Weinzierl, Executive Director of IL Corn.

During the visit, Senator Ellman learned about the equipment used in planting, observed the early growth stages of crops, and discussed sustainable methods such as cover crop management. Gracie Pierson guided her across the fields, explaining the decisions farmers make throughout the year—from planting strategies to harvesting plans.

Senator Ellman represents the 21st Senate District, which includes areas in DuPage and Will counties near Chicago. Since she serves mainly urban communities, this farm visit offered a valuable chance to connect with agricultural realities that are often unfamiliar to city residents.

It provided insights into how family farms operate and the role of agriculture in the state’s economy and environment.

The visit was part of IL Corn’s broader effort to build relationships between policymakers and farmers. By hosting lawmakers like Senator Ellman, the organization aims to strengthen communication between rural and urban regions and ensure agriculture is fairly represented in policy decisions.

IL Corn expressed gratitude to Senator Ellman for spending time on the farm and listening to the voices of farmers. This exchange fosters better understanding and supports thoughtful legislation that considers the needs of both rural communities and urban constituencies.

Building these relationships is vital to protecting and advancing the future of Illinois agriculture.
