IL Corn Advocates for Farmers at Ag Legislative Day

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) actively participated in the Annual Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day (IALD), organized by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Held in Springfield, the event brought together agricultural organizations and FFA students to advocate for the state's top farming priorities.

The day began with a program led by FFA students, which featured guest speakers highlighting agriculture’s vital role in Illinois. ICGA board members engaged with students and professionals, reinforcing their commitment to future leaders in farming.

After the program, ICGA representatives held 14 meetings with lawmakers at the Capitol and the Stratton Building. During these meetings, they presented key policy concerns that directly affect corn farmers in Illinois.

One top priority was support for the Renewable Fuel Infrastructure Program. This initiative would use existing funds from the industry to upgrade fuel stations so they can carry higher blends of renewable fuels. ICGA urged legislators to co-sponsor this bill and include it in the budget.

Another focus was the Family Farm Preservation Act, which aims to reform the Illinois Estate Tax. It would raise the current $4 million threshold for farms qualifying for the IRS’s 2032A agricultural valuation rule, helping families keep their farms across generations.

ICGA also opposed the Pesticide Notification for Schools bill, which proposes additional regulations near schools. The association suggested using advanced mapping tools to improve communication without adding burdensome rules.

IL Corn thanked lawmakers who engaged in thoughtful discussions and listened to farmers’ concerns. The organization remains dedicated to pushing for policies that support and protect agriculture in Illinois. Through events like IALD, ICGA ensures farmers’ voices are heard at the state level.
