Building Predictability Through Cooperative Agriculture Models

Building Predictability Through Cooperative Agriculture Models

By Andi Anderson

Farmers across the United States are facing rising challenges. Global competition, unpredictable weather, and growing input costs are making it hard for farmers to maintain steady incomes.

For the third year in a row, row crop farmers may face losses between $50 to $70 per acre, according to the University of Illinois. Corn and soybean yields are slowing, and global farming land has reached a peak.

This uncertainty impacts the entire food system. To create a stable future, farmers and businesses must move away from relying only on commodity prices and toward more predictable methods.

Cooperatives like Land O’Lakes show how teamwork can lead to better results. With over 100 years of experience, Land O’Lakes believes in working together to support farmers and communities.

One way to create stability is through the use of data. Technology helps farmers plan each acre carefully, apply the right inputs at the right time, and track performance closely.

Land O’Lakes’ WinField United Innovation Center collects millions of data points each year to provide farmers with accurate advice.

Keystone Cooperative is another great example. This group helps farmers apply crop protection exactly when and where it’s needed, improving both yield and return on investment.

Cooperatives also think long term. Their “patient capital” means they invest not just for today, but for the next generation. Land O’Lakes supports 50% of U.S. harvested acres and touches over 100 million animals each day. They also invest in rural communities, such as helping train future doctors in underserved areas.

In conclusion, whether inside or outside of a cooperative, the message is clear—working together, thinking long term, and using technology are the best ways to secure the future of farming.
