Avett Brothers Set Grandstand Stage Alive at Illinois State Fair

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois State Fair will host an exciting evening of music as The Avett Brothers perform at the Illinois Lottery Grandstand Stage on August 20, 2026. The popular folk-rock band is known for blending genres, strong harmonies, and emotional performances that connect with audiences of all ages.

The Avett Brothers gained widespread recognition after their 2009 album I and Love and You. They continued their success with hit albums like The Carpenter and Magpie and the Dandelion, both of which ranked among the top five on the Billboard 200 chart. Their music combines elements of folk, rock, and country, making their style unique and widely appreciated.

“The Illinois State Fair continues to bring a diverse lineup of nationally recognized talent to our Grandstand, and The Avett Brothers are a perfect addition,” said Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II.

Their 2016 album True Sadness was a major achievement, reaching the number one position on Billboard’s Top Albums chart and earning two GRAMMY nominations. The story behind this album was also shared in the documentary May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers, directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio.

The band has continued to grow creatively. Their 2019 album Closer Than Together featured the hit song “High Steppin’,” which topped the Americana Radio Singles chart. During the pandemic, they released The Third Gleam, which also reached number one on several Billboard charts.

In 2024, they released a self-titled album that highlighted their natural songwriting skills. The same year, a Broadway musical inspired by their music, Swept Away, received strong appreciation from audiences. Their contributions to music have earned them recognition, including induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The Avett Brothers bring an energy and authenticity that will make this a can’t-miss night at the Illinois State Fair,” said Illinois State Fair Manager Rebecca Clark.

Tickets will go on sale on May 16, with various pricing options available. The fair will take place from August 13 to August 23 in Springfield, offering entertainment, culture, and memorable experiences.
