Adams County fair brings livestock shows and country music

The Adams County Fair is in full swing this weekend, offering a packed schedule of events that cater to all ages. Highlighting the festivities are the livestock judging competitions and a night of country music classics in the Grandstand Arena.

Saturday morning kicked off with a co-ed volleyball tournament, setting a lively tone for the day. Livestock events began with sheep and dairy judging, followed by 4-H swine and beef judging, and an open class rabbit competition.

Nate Lundly, a former 4-H competitor, attended as a spectator this year. He reminisced about his participation in past competitions, emphasizing the lasting impact of these experiences.

"These kids are learning skills that will help them all through their lives," he said. "Not just the livestock work itself, but the discipline to be here on time, show up, show the animals, deal with the judges. That's all stuff that will come in handy with jobs and relationships."

Beyond livestock events, the fair offers a variety of activities for attendees. The Olde Tyme Association Ice Cream Contest, a bags tournament, and the Great Lakes Timber Lumberjack Show add to the fun. In the Family Fun Zone, Micki Cooper's daughter enjoyed sharing treats with the animals.

"It's a good day to come out," Cooper said. "We can get on the rides and stuff and get back home before the older kids get out here." Cooper, who has brought her now-5-year-old daughter to the fair for the past two years, shared that the petting zoo is always a favorite. "We live in town, so we don't get to see animals like this," she said. "She's just so excited, how could you say no?"

Saturday night's entertainment featured performances by country music stars Diamond Rio and Sawyer Brown, drawing a large crowd to the Grandstand Arena.

The fair continues on Sunday with more exciting events. The Grandstand Arena will host the Xcaliber Tractor Pull, team roping events, and additional livestock judging. Sunday morning participants can join "The Grace Race," a 5K run and walk.

The Adams County Fair, held near Mendon, runs through Tuesday, offering a blend of traditional and modern attractions that celebrate the region's agricultural heritage and community spirit. With its diverse range of activities, the fair promises a memorable experience for all who attend.
