The Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership (ISAP) is seeking applicants for the sixth edition of its Soil Health Leadership Program. This program cultivates a network of professionals dedicated to improving soil health and environmental stewardship in Illinois agriculture.
"We aim to create a system-based approach to soil health and nutrient reduction," says Jim Isermann, ISAP's soil health specialist. Launched in 2016, the program has empowered graduates with the knowledge to manage soil health, including its physical, biological, and chemical characteristics.
Selected participants will gain valuable insights into improving soil health through practical management practices and overcoming common challenges in transitioning to a soil health-focused system. They will also benefit from networking and relationship building with other professionals and farmers in their region.
Brandon Hall, a graduate of the program, highlights the opportunity to develop skills and connect with experienced professionals. "The program allowed me to focus on my passion for soil health and connect with others in the industry," he says.
Training sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including:
- Soil structure and function
- Nutrient management and soil biology
- Cover crop selection and management
- Planting and tillage equipment setup
- Field demonstrations on soil health
- Communication and outreach strategies
The program consists of six bi-monthly sessions over 18 months, starting in August 2024. Each session incorporates both classroom learning and hands-on field experiences.
Graduates will be recognized as Soil Health Ambassadors, and the program offers CCA Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
