Illinois Expands Funding for Local Food Growth

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is making a significant investment in the state’s local food system through a new funding opportunity designed to support farmers, food businesses, and nonprofit organizations. The initiative aims to strengthen food production, storage, processing, and distribution networks across Illinois.

A total of $1.8 million has been made available through the Local Food Infrastructure Grants Program. The funding is intended to help organizations improve local food systems and expand access to fresh and locally produced agricultural products. By supporting important infrastructure projects, the program seeks to create stronger connections between producers, distributors, and consumers.

The grant funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including the purchase of equipment and the development of critical infrastructure. Eligible projects may include refrigerated vehicles for transporting food, improved food storage facilities, food processing equipment, and community kitchens. These investments can help reduce food waste, improve product quality, and increase the efficiency of local food operations.

The program offers financial assistance for both individual and collaborative projects. Individual applicants can receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $75,000, allowing smaller operations to upgrade equipment or improve facilities. Larger collaborative projects involving multiple partners may qualify for funding of up to $250,000, encouraging cooperation among organizations working to strengthen local food networks.

The funding opportunity is expected to benefit a wide range of groups, including farmers, food entrepreneurs, community organizations, and nonprofit institutions. Improved infrastructure can help local producers reach new markets, increase business opportunities, and support economic growth within rural and urban communities alike.

Applications for the grant program will officially open on November 2, 2026, and will remain available until January 6, 2027, at noon. Interested applicants are encouraged to begin preparations as early as possible to ensure they meet all requirements before the deadline.

One important step in the application process is completing the required pre-registration. According to program information, this process may take two to four weeks. Starting early can help applicants avoid delays and ensure their submissions are completed on time.

The Local Food Infrastructure Grants Program highlights Illinois’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector and improve food system resilience. By providing financial support for essential equipment and infrastructure, the program aims to help farmers and food-related organizations grow, improve efficiency, and better serve their communities. These investments are expected to contribute to a stronger local food economy and create long-term benefits for producers and consumers across the state.
