The University of Illinois Extension will celebrate the grand opening of the Center for Food Systems, Nutrition Security, and Health Integration on September 24, 2026. The event marks an important step toward strengthening food systems, improving nutrition security, and supporting community health throughout Illinois.
The center has been established as a statewide strategic hub within the University of Illinois Extension and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Its primary goal is to advance research, innovation, leadership, and collaboration related to food systems, nutrition security, and public health.
The new center will bring together experts, community organizations, and partners to address challenges affecting access to healthy food and community wellness. By encouraging teamwork and knowledge-sharing, the center aims to help create healthier and more resilient communities across the state.
The grand opening event will provide guests with an opportunity to learn about the center’s mission, future plans, and strategic priorities. Attendees will also be able to connect with researchers, educators, and community leaders while exploring potential partnerships that can strengthen local and regional food systems.
The event will take place at the Funk Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences Library, Heritage Room, located at 1101 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana, Illinois. Visitors will be welcomed during an afternoon of networking, presentations, and discussions focused on the center’s future impact.
The program schedule begins at 1 p.m. with arrival and networking activities. At 2 p.m., attendees will hear presentations and remarks about the center’s vision and goals. Beginning at 3 p.m., guests will have the opportunity to explore key initiatives and continue networking with community partners and stakeholders.
Several university leaders and community representatives are expected to participate in the event. Speakers include Matthew Vann, Associate Dean and Director, University of Illinois Extension, and Jennifer McCaffrey, Executive Director, Center for Food Systems, Nutrition Security, and Health Integration, and Assistant Dean, University of Illinois Extension. Other key guests and community partners will also be in attendance.
The launch of the center highlights a commitment to improving nutrition security, supporting innovative research, and encouraging community-based solutions. Through collaboration and leadership, the center seeks to address important food and health challenges while helping communities build a stronger and healthier future.
