Western Illinois University’s School of Agriculture and Office of Student Engagement will host a Family Day BBQ on Saturday, September 28. The event, which celebrates WIU’s Family Day, will take place at 1:30 p.m. during the football tailgate in Q-Lot, ahead of the university football team’s first home game of the season.
The highlight of the event will be a barbecue ribs and brisket competition, where attendees can purchase tickets to taste various entries. Each team competing will also offer a “people’s choice” item for guests to sample.
Tasting tickets will be available for purchase, with prices set at $4 each, two for $6, or four for $10. Additionally, ticket packages including t-shirts and access to the tasting and football game are available online at wiu.edu/familyday.
This year’s Family Day t-shirts will feature a fun design and will be available in WIU’s signature purple color.
In addition to the barbecue competition, attendees can enjoy live music by the Rock’n Papas, participate in a bags tournament, and explore a variety of family-friendly activities.
Numerous boutiques and vendors will be present, offering items for purchase. The event will conclude at 5:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony to announce the winners of the barbecue competition.
The Family Day BBQ is sponsored by local organizations, including Clock Tower Community Bank, Compeer Financial, the Illinois Farm Bureau, McDonough County Farm Bureau, Pepsi, Smithfield, Sodexo, and the Tri-County Cattlemen's Association. With plenty of food, fun, and activities for the whole family, the event is set to be an exciting day for all attendees.
