4-H Foundation Awards Scholarships to Prepare Future Leaders

4-H Foundation Awards Scholarships to Prepare Future Leaders

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois 4-H Foundation has announced the awarding of $67,500 in scholarships to recognize the achievements of Illinois 4-H members preparing for college, careers, and community leadership.

These merit-based scholarships celebrate excellence, responsibility, and real-world skills developed through long term participation in the 4-H program.

The scholarships were awarded to 45 young adults across nine focus categories of the State 4-H Award program. Each recipient received a $1250 scholarship, reflecting a strong standard of achievement and dedication. The awards are designed to support youth as they transition into higher education, the workforce, military service, or apprenticeship programs.

“These scholarships recognize more than achievement, they reflect the leadership, responsibility, and real-world skills 4-H members have built through their experiences,” said Melissa Irwin, University of Illinois Extension 4-H club support and awards associate. “Recipients are not only excelling in 4-H, they are preparing to succeed in college, careers, and their communities.”

A formal celebration and awards ceremony was held on Friday, April 3, in Champaign. The event took place alongside a 4-H Signing Day, which honors graduating seniors and their chosen paths beyond high school. The Signing Day event is part of the Beyond Ready National 4-H initiative, which supports youth as they plan for life after graduation.

Scholarships were awarded in nine areas, including Animal Sciences, Civic Engagement and Global Living, Creative and Performing Arts and Communications, Gardening Agriculture and Food Access, Healthy Living and Nutrition, Leadership, Natural Resources and Environmental Science, Personal Growth, and STEM and Robotics. These categories reflect the broad educational opportunities available through 4-H participation.

Sponsors from across Illinois supported the scholarship program, helping ensure continued investment in youth development and agricultural education.

“Through the Illinois 4-H scholarship program, we are investing in young people who have demonstrated commitment, growth, and a strong foundation for the future,” said Irwin. “These awards help open doors while reinforcing the career-ready skills youth gain through 4-H.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation continues to strengthen communities by recognizing youth who demonstrate excellence, service, and readiness for future success.
