Durbin Delivers Strong Support for Illinois

By Andi Anderson

U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin announced major support for Illinois through newly enacted funding bills for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and related agencies for Fiscal Year 2026.

These investments are designed to strengthen local communities, enhance military readiness, expand veteran services, and support agriculture and rural development programs across the state.

Durbin emphasized the importance of this progress, stating, “As the government reopens under a continuing resolution, Congress also passed appropriations bills that bolster our nation’s military readiness, support our veterans, and fund programs that our rural communities rely on.”

Several military construction priorities received funding, including upgrades at Rock Island Arsenal, renovations at Marseilles Range Control, a new readiness center in Peoria, and updated quality assurance facilities. These projects enhance safety, expand capabilities, and improve working conditions for service members.

The agriculture and rural development bill directs funding toward hospital infrastructure improvements, rural clinic expansions, community centers, telehealth, medical technology upgrades, and services for underserved children. These investments strengthen local health systems and provide better access to care in rural areas.

Additional federal support includes major USDA research investments such as bee genome sequencing, soybean germplasm protection, agricultural research programs, and efforts to track state-level farm exports. Funding also supports programs that protect trees from pests, improve animal welfare, expand broadband in rural communities, and strengthen food safety training.

International food and nutrition programs, including Food for Peace and the McGovern-Dole Program, also continue to receive strong funding. SNAP and WIC programs are fully supported to ensure families can access healthy food.

FDA investments include funding for ALS research, youth tobacco prevention enforcement, food safety, and oversight of dietary supplements. These initiatives help protect public health and support scientific advancements.

Durbin highlighted the significance of these actions by stressing the need for Congress to continue funding programs that help communities thrive. The bills reflect broad efforts to support military families, protect rural communities, and strengthen agriculture across Illinois.
