Dr Lucas Maxwell has been named chair of the Department of Agriculture at Illinois State University, with his tenure beginning on July 1, 2025. Maxwell’s appointment reflects his extensive contributions to agricultural education, leadership, and research.

Since joining Illinois State University in 2017, Maxwell has worked closely with undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in agricultural education, communication, and leadership.

He is highly involved at the state and national levels, serving on committees such as the Illinois Agricultural Education University Council and the National FFA Agricultural Issues Career Development Event committee.

Maxwell’s leadership roles within the university include chairing the Department of Agriculture’s Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Recruitment Committee.

He also serves as faculty advisor to multiple student organizations. His research focuses on professional development in teaching and the recruitment, retention, and placement of agriculture professionals.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to serve my colleagues and students in the Department of Agriculture,” Maxwell stated. “Together, we will build on the department’s legacy of excellence.”

Dr Chad McEvoy, Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology, expressed confidence in Maxwell’s leadership, saying, “The department has a rich history, and I am excited to see the accomplishments of this passionate team under Lucas’s guidance.”

Maxwell’s dedication to agricultural education has earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Young Educator award from NARRU, the Honorary American FFA Degree, and the Outstanding Mid-Career Alumni award from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

As chair, Maxwell aims to enhance the department’s programs and strengthen its impact on students, alumni, and the agricultural industry, fostering a bright future for agriculture education at Illinois State University.
