The Illinois Pork Producers Association is currently celebrating the commemoration of Senate Joint Resolution 22, sponsored by Senator Tom Bennett (R-53), which designates May 3 as “Illinois Bacon Day".
Today, pig farmers, IPPA staff, and FFA state officers are handing out BLT sandwiches to legislators at the Illinois State Capitol and discussing the crucial role that pork production plays in Illinois, the fourth largest pork producing state in the United States.
While Illinois Bacon Day is a day for celebration, it is also an opportunity to draw attention to the challenges that Illinois pork producers face. Pig farmers face daily challenges such as market fluctuations in pork prices, environmental concerns, high feed costs, and preparedness for disease outbreaks.
To show support for Illinois pig farmers and pork producers everywhere, people are being encouraged to share the "Illinois Bacon Day" asset on social media today, May 3rd. Even if someone does not have social media, they can forward it to someone who does. By doing so, they will be spreading awareness about the importance of pork production and supporting the hardworking farmers who make it possible.
