NFU empowers future leaders at cooperative conference
USAgNet - 02/26/2024

Last weekend, Minneapolis was the focal point for future agricultural leaders as the National Farmers Union (NFU) held its College Conference on Cooperatives (CCOC). This three-day event attracted 76 students and educators from across the country, offering them an in-depth look into the cooperative business model that's essential in agriculture.

Emma McCormick, NFU Senior Director of Engagement, emphasized the historical importance of cooperatives in both rural and urban settings and the NFU's commitment to educating the next generation on this sustainable business model.

The conference featured a blend of talks from industry representatives, cooperative leaders, and university scholars, alongside visits to successful cooperatives like Seward Community Co-op and REI Co-op.

The engagement with established and emerging cooperatives provided students with a rare glimpse into the diverse opportunities within the cooperative sector. This included insights from Compeer Farm Credit, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, and others, enriching the attendees' understanding of cooperative careers, leadership, and development.

Supported by organizations like the CHS Foundation and the NFU Foundation, the conference stands as a testament to NFU's dedication to its core principles of education, civic engagement, and cooperation. The event not only educates but also inspires young leaders to explore and innovate within the cooperative model, ensuring the future of American agriculture is bright and sustainable.
