University of Illinois Extension Offers Legal Training Webinar Series for Illinois Small Farms

The University of Illinois Extension has teamed up with Farm Commons, a nonprofit organization specializing in farm law, to present a quarterly webinar series titled "Legal Training for Illinois Small Farms." Designed to address legal questions and concerns specific to Illinois farmers, the series aims to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to navigate legal issues and protect their farming operations.

Led by Farm Commons staff, the interactive workshops provide a supportive environment for farmers to learn and ask questions. The series comprises four sessions, each lasting one hour, and is free to attend. Both experienced farmers and newcomers can benefit from the practical tips shared in the webinars.

The sessions scheduled for the series are as follows:

June 26: Exploring the H-2A Visa Program - This session explores the H-2A visa program, which enables farmers to hire seasonal and temporary agricultural workers from other countries. Participants will learn about the program's regulatory obligations, assess its suitability for addressing labor shortages, and discover ways to ensure worker protection and safety.

September 18: 5 Steps to Protect Your Farm, Legally Speaking - Regardless of size, location, or longevity, every farm or ranch can take steps to protect itself from legal risks. This session guides farmers on key measures that can have a significant impact on their operations' legal resilience, offering valuable knowledge and confidence in dealing with essential farm law issues.

December 18: Land Leasing Basics - Leasing farmland is common practice, but having a solid lease agreement is essential to prevent potential problems. This session covers the basics of land leasing, providing insights into lease agreements and best practices for creating carefully crafted documents that align with individual needs. Whether a landowner, rancher, or farmer, attendees will gain the tools and skills needed for effective land leasing.

March 18, 2024: Forming an LLC - Many farmers choose to establish a Limited Liability Company (LLC) as their preferred business structure. This session highlights the benefits of an LLC as a risk management tool, outlines best practices for formation and implementation, and provides guidance on fulfilling ongoing obligations to maintain the LLC's legal integrity. Even farmers with existing LLCs can gain insights into preserving their resilience.
