High Schools Receive Grants to Add Pork to Their Menus
Illinois Ag Connection - 09/23/2021

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) announced 23 recipients of the IPPA Food Service Grant for the fall of 2021. The application opportunity was made available to all Illinois high school culinary, food services and consumer education classes. With additional funding provided by IPPA, all the schools that applied this round were rewarded.

The grant was created to educate students about pork production, which refers to the raising of pigs, and the quality protein that pig farmers raise. The grant provides necessary funding to purchase pork that teachers can implement in their respective classes.

This spring IPPA awarded nearly $5,000 to 24 schools, reaching 1962 students. This fall grant gives another $5,000 worth of funds that will help classrooms expose over 1774 students to the simplicity of cooking with pork. In one calendar year, this program will successfully educate over 3,700 students in the state of Illinois.

"Teaching students about pork production helps us make the connection between raising animals and the food we eat," shares Alan Kollmann, IPPA president. "Showing students how to properly cook pork shows them versatility in meals and makes them life-long customers after tasting the delicious flavor."

The selected high schools are as follows:

- Bement High School

- Bond County Community High School

- Bushnell-Prairie City High School

- Carbondale Community High School

- Chaddock School

- Clinton High School

- Collinsville High School

- Gallatin County High School

- Geneva High School

- Grand Prairie High School

- Harlem High School

- Heritage High School

- Lewistown High School

- Liberty High School

- Marion High School

- Marshall High School

- Normal West High School

- Princeton High School

- Rock Falls Township High School

- Rooks Creek High School

- Springfield High School

- Warren High School

- West Prairie Jr/Sr High School

IPPA understands that no two classrooms across the state have the same format, due to the pandemic. To still provide this influential funding and be best utilized, teachers have the flexibility to provide pork for in-classroom learning or take-home projects. Teachers are encouraged to be creative with their planning to implement multiple cuts of meat and varying flavor profiles.

This grant is made possible by IPPA and Pork Checkoff funding. Go to ilpork.com to find various funding opportunities and resources.
