Cooperative Youth Conference June 8-9 at WIU
Illinois Ag Connection - 05/22/2017

The 2017 Illinois Cooperative Council Youth Conference will be held June 8-9 on the campus of Western Illinois University.

The event provides Fall 2017 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with a unique opportunity to learn about the cooperative business model. Cooperatives from across the state provide sponsorships to offset housing and meal costs for the conference, allowing students to attend at no cost.

Students learn about the seven cooperative principles and benefits of a cooperative, as well as governance and operation. They also participate in a field trip to see cooperatives in action. Workshops are led by experienced cooperative employees who provide students with insight into important qualities of all types of cooperatives. They also experience a taste of college life by staying in the dorms and relaxing at the student recreation center.

A registration form is available at bit.ly/2qwDgMJ. A $30 deposit is required, but will be refunded when the student arrives at the conference. Teacher in-service training is also provided for agriculture instructors who bring students to the conference.

The conference is coordinated by the Illinois Cooperative Council, the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs and WIU's College of Agriculture. The conference rotates between WIU and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale each year to allow students from across the state the opportunity to attend.
