Action for Healthy Kids and Saputo Help 100 Schools
Illinois Ag Connection - 09/24/2018

Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) announces another 100 recipients of school grants made possible by funding from Saputo for the 2018-2019 school year. Awarded in California, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Wisconsin, the grants provide schools with funding and technical support using AFHK's Game On program to help expand student access to in-school physical activity and healthy foods, improve knowledge and behaviors around exercise and nutrition, and engage parents in activities that reinforce healthy habits at home.

Through these grants, AFHK helps schools develop school health teams which are critical to creating healthy schools, assess their school health environment, and successfully implement nutrition and physical activity initiatives. The Saputo-funded grants range from $500 to help returning grantees sustain their programs to $1,000 for new grantees. These funds will be used to support:

Physical activity initiatives, such as funding for physical education, active indoor and outdoor recess, classroom energizers, walking and running clubs, and before and after-school programs; and Nutrition initiatives, such as nutrition education, school gardens, taste tests, and healthy classroom parties that introduce students to the value of a healthy diet.

Thanks to Saputo's support, the grants are expected to impact more than 52,000 students this school year and are part of Saputo's long-term commitment to expand the grants to reach 280 schools and 140,000 students by 2019.

"Saputo's commitment to supporting its employees and their families in adopting healthy eating habits and active lifestyles has gone hand in hand with their commitment to helping improve the school communities where Saputo employees live and work," said Rob Bisceglie, CEO, Action for Healthy Kids. "With Saputo's continued support, we are able to provide much-needed resources in the form of grants, technical assistance, and volunteer engagement that will enable schools to create and sustain healthy school environments."
