Farm Journal Survey Shows Trump Slowly Losing Farm Support
USAgNet - 08/21/2018

A survey executed by Farm Journal Pulse, a product of Farm Journal Media, shows the support America's farmers and ranchers have given to President Donald Trump is shrinking. The survey of more than 2,400 of the nation's farmers and ranchers indicates tariffs the president has imposed on United States' trading partners Canada, China and Mexico have hurt his approval rating.

"Almost 70% of America's farmers and ranchers voted for Donald Trump in 2016," said Andy Weber, CEO of Farm Journal. "Yet this poll shows that only 54% would vote for him again. Our research from this survey contradicts a recent news story from a reputable news outlet which indicated the majority of farmers and ranchers were continuing to stand firm with President Trump. This is a great example of Farm Journal's unparalleled ability to accurately and rapidly execute research that captures intel on what farmers and ranchers are really thinking."

In less than 48 hours, 2,454 farmers and ranchers who participated in the survey. The robust engagement included participation from 48 states.

The survey shows that 51% of those participating view the president as favorable, while 43% view him unfavorable and 5% view him neither favorable nor unfavorable.

When asked if their opinion of President Trump had changed since the start of the Trade Wars, 38% of respondents indicated they had no change in their opinion, while 36% said their opinion was less favorable and 26% said their opinion was more favorable.

A further breakdown of respondents by age indicates that young farmers and ranchers are more optimistic and confident regarding the president than their older peers.

Additionally, of the states that participated, Iowa, a state President Trump carried in the 2016 election, led the responses with 13%. While popular in 2016, it seems today that Iowa farmers favorability toward the president has altered slightly as 42% of Iowa farmers surveyed say they are still favorable toward the president. However, 55% of Iowa farmers surveyed state they would not cast a vote for President Trump again.
